NCTE Assembly for Research Midwinter Conference*
Preparing Language Arts Teachers for the 21st Century:
Research, Practice & Policy
February 25-27, 2000
Seattle, Washington
How do teachers learn to teach Language Arts across their
careers? What makes for effective preservice teacher
education? What enables beginning teachers to continue to
grow and to learn as they face new challenges? What roles do
on-going professional development, mentoring programs, and
support systems play in the development of teachers? How do
policies related to standards, assessment, and teacher
preparation influence the quality and practice of teachers?
What challenges do teacher educators and teachers face in
preparing to teach in the 21st century?
These and other questions will frame our Midwinter Conference
for 2000. Join us for 3 days of stimulating research
presentations, round table discussions, panels, and informal
conversation. This conference is specifically designed for
university and school-based researchers interested in K-12
language arts/literacy, graduate students, and others
interested in preparation and continuing development of
language arts/literacy teachers. The conference provides a
small, friendly forum for collegial exchange and learning. We
welcome new members to join us as we discuss an issue that
has captured the nation=92s attention and spurred intense
debates.
Take this opportunity to explore Seattle! We offer a wealth
of culture, cuisine, and coffee. A cosmopolitan city in the
beautiful Northwest, Seattle boasts of some of the finest
restaurants and scenery the country has to offer. And, it=92s
