17 December 1999 20:58 UTC
Good Afternoon,
Please find attached the summary of responses we received from our request
for recommendations for diversity speakers. We received such great
responses! I have attached the summary as well as cut and pasted it below,
in case some of you can't open attached documents.
Thanks again to everyone who responded. We are very excited and will be
contacting you soon.
Take care,
Karla Gottlieb

SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR SPEAKERS ABOUT DIVERSITY AND SERVICE-LEARNING
>From Dwight Giles:
My colleague here at Vanderbilt, Professor Sharon Shields
Voice Mail: 615-343-2561
E-Mail: sharon.l.shields@vanderbilt.edu
shieldsvu@aol.com
is an excellent speaker and presenter on this topic. Her
course on diversity is a service-learning class. She has
also presented on this topic previously. She is part of
the Vanderbilt University Service-Learning task force and
has received awards and recognition for her unique service
learning classes. I recommend her very highly.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>From Betty Hibler, betty_hibler@smtpgtwy.berea.edu:
I recently met someone who I think would make an excellent speaker. His
name
is Gregory T. Ricks, he is African American, he has worked in higher ed.
and
was for a number of years connected with City Year in Boston. He is
currently a senior fellow with Triangle Residential Options for Substance
Abusers in Durham, NC. I recently heard him speak rather informally at a
meeting of directors of Bonner Scholars Programs and he was extremely
inspirational.

>From Barbara Ross, bross@mail.fsu.edu
Hi Karla! I searched through our database for all of the listings we had
under "diversity", which are below. This means they in some way have
contributed to our newsletter on a diversity issue, or spoke at the
diversity conference FCC held at your college. I can't particularly
recommend one person over another as a speaker, but it's a start. Also, try
calling Joe Follman (850) 644-0260 - he might have more specific info on
speakers as he got most of them for the Diversity conference FCC did. Hope
it helps!

i was very interested in your email requesting speakers. i am currently a
doctoral student in social justice education at the university of
massachusetts-amherst and have been involved professionally in
service-learning (in the curricular and cocurricular) for 5 years. my
research area is looking at the impact of service-learning on student
attitudes toward social justice (defined as consciousness raising,
inclusion, appreciation for diversity, and activism). in addition to
working
with faculty to integrate s-l into the curriculum, i am currently working
with pre-service teachers on ways to design s-l experiences with a social
justice lens. i am happy to pass along
a resume as well as my masters capstone project (service-learning as social
justice education), and some additional presentation materials that i have
used for other conference presentations.

I recently read your posting on the national SL listserv and would like to
recommend three individual who have done outstanding work in the area of
"appreciating diversity in service learning." In particular, they have
served as leaders in the California State University system (23 campuses
throughout CA), leading a systemwide working group on addressing issues of
diversity in service-learning experiences, provided institutes and
trainings
that worked to develop authentic partnerships in service learning, and
collected a great deal of research on the topic from around the country. I
would be happy to talk with you more about each of these individuals, if
you
would like more information. I can be reached at 562-951-4773,
efreihage@calstate.edu
My three recommendations are:
Dr. Kathleen Rice, Coordinator of SL 200, CSU Monterey Bay, Service
Learning
Institute, kathleen_rice@monterey.edu, phone: 831-582-3633
Ms. Michelle Slade, Coordinator of Student Leadership and Faculty Support,
CSU Monterey Bay, Service Learning Institute, michelle_slade@monterey.edu,
phone: 831-582-3631
Ms. Bethtina Woodridge, SL Instructor, CSU Monterey Bay, Service Learning
Institute, bethtina_woodridge@monterey.edu, phone: 831-884-9900.
Below you will also find a description of the CSU working group led by
Kathleen and Michelle:
Filling the Void: Authentically addressing issues of diversity and
multiculturalism in service learning
This working group will attempt to fill a void commonly found in
conversations regarding diversity and multiculturalism in service
learning. Recognizing that the service relationship can, and often does,
reinforce systemic oppression, this group will engage in a three part
process:
1) Investigate and share theories, practices and models that engage
students, faculty, administrators, and community partners in critical
self-reflection on the dynamics of service in an unjust system, including
power, privilege, and oppression.
2) Engage in our own experiential process of self-reflection on the
relationship between our identities and our roles in the service learning
relationship. 3) Informed by research and experience, recommend models and
strategies for teaching and learning that intentionally transform
oppressive
service learning relationships into partnerships for social change. This
report will include strategies for responding to the developmental needs of
participants, including resistance often encountered in engaging in this
type of service learning.

Karla: I am the principal, and past service-learning coordinator, at the
West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind. Service-learning began
here in the fall of 1993 and quickly grew to a campus-wide program. Deaf
and blind children, able to serve along with their able bodied peers, found
self-worth and a real sense of community by doing things for and with
others. This school was awarded one of only 70 Leader School awards for
the
entire United States last summer. My husband and I have extensive
experience presenting the s-l message from Maryland to California, and
would
be happy to share our thoughts at your workshops. You may feel free to
contact me by e-mail or at 304-822-4880/4881 (keeping in mind we'll be away
2 weeks at Christmas). Thanks, Connie and W. Jack Newhouse

I am the Director of our Service Learning program here at the University of
Minnesota-Crookston and a good resource would be Erin Bowley from the
Minnesota Campus Compact office. She can be reached at
embowley@stthomas.edu I have also done quite a bit of presenting on
service
learning and some integration of diversity within our sociology programs
depending on what your needs are we could possibly discuss this.

To that list I would add Michael Keller, MA. He is at Central Oregon
Community College. His track record in our Western Region is off the
charts. His specialties include diversity and leadership, both in the
context of s-l.

First, your Project sounds interesting and crucial. I say "crucial,"
because given my experience with service learning I have found that
educators assume that somehow by sending their students out into the
community to work with diverse groups of people, they will begin to
appreciate diversity.
In my workshops with faculty, I point out that this is an incorrect
assumption. We need to ensure that students' stereotypes and assumptions
about certain groups of people do not get re-inforced in the community. As
a woman of color, I am very aware of the fact that students must be
challenged to confront their "isms"--and service learning provides a viable
option for students to grow as they begin to understand diversity.
In my present position as Director, I offer workshops for faculty
development, bringing to the forefront these issues; and showing faculty
the
importance of emphasizing critical pedagogy while doing reflections.
I am really glad to know that you are addressing one of the most crucial
dimensions of service learning.
If you would like to discuss this further, I can be reached at 503-725-4676.

late, I'd like to add my name as a possible speaker. I am a

still interested in ways to stay connected to this field.
