Stanford University is seeking an inspired national leader in the arena of public service to carry the Haas Center for Public Service into the next phase of its development.  Established in 1984, the Haas Center promotes, organizes and supports public and community service by members of the Stanford community, especially students.  The mission of the Haas Center is to:

·       Respond effectively to community needs as identified by community members.
·       Develop in students requisite knowledge, skills and commitment for a lifetime of effective participation in public life.
·       Connect community needs and academic scholarship in a way that expands students’ intellectual development and provides effective assistance to off-campus communities.

The Haas Center is a highly visible organization that involves more than 2500 students each year in academic and co-curricular programs in the local community, at the state and federal levels, and overseas.  It houses and advises more than 35 student organizations involved in community service, public policy development, analysis and implementation, and advocacy for solutions to persistent social problems, and administers University-sponsored programs. The Center collaborates with deans, department chairs, and faculty to build connections between service and academic instruction and research across the curriculum. It also serves as the campus base for Stanford in Washington and Upward Bound

The Director serves as the executive leader and manager of the Center, responsible for establishing its vision in consultation and collaboration with the Faculty Steering Committee, the National Advisory Board, the Haas Unifying Board, and the senior administration of the University and implementing these through effective practice.  As chief administrator of the Center, s/he is responsible for planning and management of its programs and operation; the quality of service to students, faculty, and community organizations; program planning; budgeting and fundraising. The Director recruits, supports, leads and manages a diverse permanent staff of 21, more than 30 part-time student employees, and volunteer mentors.

Qualifications include: a passion for public service education, and deep understanding of the role students, faculty, and higher education as a whole can play in serving the public good;  demonstrated and inspired national leadership in the arena of public service, the non-profit sector, and/or education-related public service programs; ability to engage faculty in the pedagogy of service-learning in an academic setting; experience in designing, implementing, and teaching college-level service-learning courses highly desired; a desire to work with and mentor university students, and to respond to their interests, concerns, and challenges, especially related to public service; in-depth understanding of the relationship between a research university and the surrounding communities, and the implications of the relationships at the national, state, and regional levels; professional or voluntary experience in the community and demonstrated use of effective responses to community needs; ability to represent Haas Center and its programs effectively to diverse constituencies; proven ability to recruit interest from and relate effectively to a wide variety of people of many backgrounds, including an understanding and appreciation of cultural, ethnic and individual differences; significant successful management experience, including: financial management and planning; staff recruitment, development, supervision and management; program planning, design and implementation; and demonstrated successful experience in fundraising and stewardship necessary to support a $2 million organization.  An advanced degree is expected.
