Our current Director of the Feinstein Institute for Public Service at
Providence College, Rick Battistoni, will be stepping down from his
position this summer to return full-time to the teaching faculty.  Below

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

Director
Feinstein Institute for Public Service

Providence College, a Catholic and Dominican institution, invites
applications for the position of Director of the Feinstein Institute for
Public Service. The Feinstein Institute operates a unique academic program,
one which integrates community service into an interdisciplinary, liberal
arts curriculum leading to a major and minor in Public and Community
Service Studies. The director oversees the ongoing development and
implementation of this curricular program, including: faculty recruitment
and development; course scheduling; student recruitment, scholarships, and
advisement; and the development of campus-community partnerships
appropriate to the College's mission.  The Director also serves as the
point of contact and communication with local and national organizations in
the growing field of community-based service-learning.

Additional responsibilities include budgeting and grant administration, as
well as promoting service-learning across the curriculum. Appointment as
Director will include appointment to the Ordinary faculty in the
appropriate academic department. Tenure status and rank will depend on
qualifications. The Director's time will be split between administration of
the Institute and teaching, both in the Public and Community Service
Studies program and in the director's disciplinary department. Appointment
begins July 1, 2000.

Qualifications include:

Earned doctorate or terminal degree. The College especially encourages
applicants from humanities disciplines, particularly history, philosophy,
or theology, who have been trained in or who are knowledgeable about
Catholic social teaching.

Experience teaching in a curriculum-based service-learning program at the
college or university level.

Administrative experience in higher education highly desirable, including
ability to lead and mobilize various academic and community constituencies.
        
Record of scholarly publication in field of expertise, preferably including
research in community-based learning or experiential education.

letters of reference, and samples of scholarly and professional work. The
Search Committee will begin its review of applications on January 31, 2000.
