Dear Service-learning colleagues,
On February 18, 1999, Columbia University and the Children's
Defense Fund will convene a symposium to discuss the potential for
community-campus partnerships in children's health insurance outreach and
enrollment. The conference promises to be exciting, with Marian
Wright Edelman as keynote and many interesting workshops and panels.
Community-Campus Partnerships for Health will be participating in
the symposium and faciliting some of the workshops. The symposium
is open to colleges and universities in New York State.
Last year, legislation passed which makes $48 billion available to the
states to cover uninsured children. The major challenge remains to ensure
that families eligible for these program receive these services.
The Children's Defense Fund sees universities and colleges as a
significant partner in this effort.
Columbia University and the Children's Defense Fund are collaborating on a
pilot project utilizing Columbia students to raise awareness about
children's health insurance and to enroll families in New York State's
program. This collaboration is a new step for both the Children's Defense
Fund and Columbia University and it has already shown positive results.
We hope it will serve as a model to be replicated at other universities
and colleges throughout New York State.
If you are from a college or university in New York State and would like
to receive an invitation to attend the symposium, please email your
