Community College Civic Responsibility Workshops
23 December 2002 18:11 UTC
* Please excuse cross-postings *
The American Association of Community Colleges is pleased to announce nine
half-day workshops in 2003 focusing on service learning and civic
responsibility. The hands-on workshops will use activities and tools from
AACC's recent publication, "A Practical Guide for Integrating Civic
Responsibility into the Curriculum."
"The workshops are designed for community college faculty, staff, and
administrators who are interested in incorporating civic responsibility more
intentionally into academic course work, particularly using service learning,"
said Karla Gottlieb, co-editor of the Guide. "In November we presented the
workshop to faculty at Miami-Dade Community College. Participants were
enthusiastic about using the practical tools we provided."
All workshop participants will receive copies of the Guide. Workshop
activities will focus on integrating civic responsibility components into
course syllabi, encouraging student dialogue and critical thinking on civic
issues, and increasing meaningful involvement between colleges and communities.
According to Duane Oakes, one of the Guide's contributing authors, the
workshops are "designed to explore ways to help faculty prepare students for
effective involvement in a diverse democratic society and to examine the role
and obligation of higher education to produce good citizens."
Each workshop will be facilitated by authors of the civic responsibility guide.
Some locations will feature an optional introductory session on service
learning for newcomers to this teaching strategy. Workshop dates, locations,
