Late Breaking News About Break Away's Fourth National Conference
Tom Hayden, California State Senator and lifelong social activist will be
the opening speaker for National Conference. Tom worked with the Students
Non Violent Coordinating Committee in the South during the Civil Rights
Movement and founded Students for a Democratic Society in the early 60s.
Both as a student activist and politician, Tom has worked with issues of
social justice and neighborhood empowerment. Make your plans now to attend
the Conference and hear Tom's inspirational message!
Break Away's Fourth National Conference will be held at the University of
Michigan in Ann Arbor,Michigan November 7-9, 1997.
Students, faculty, staff, and community organizations will come together to
address the entire alternative break experience.
An opportunity for students and community organizations to unite and form
new partnerships in the service movement.
A chance to present workshops dealing with the many challenges associated
with planning and implementing alternative break programs. Conference
tracks include: Starting an Alternative Break, Strengthening an
Alternative>Break, Community Perspectives, Life-long Service, Issue
Specific, and Site Leader Training.
Attend and participate in Special Events including: Into the Streets,
Welfare Reform Panel, Service Exhibition, Motivational Speakers, and the
Banquet and Alternative Break Awards.
Alternative Break Awards presented for Program of the Year, Host Agency of
the Year, and Curriculum Based Alternative Break Program of the Year.
