The
15th annual National Service-Learning Conference will be in Orlando, Florida on March 28-31, 2004. In
the center of a large and fast-growing state that is itself central to national
affairs (aging populations, immigration, education, politics, and election
reform), Orlando provides an excellent platform to explore and celebrate the key
role of service-learning in building a stronger democracy.
The 2004 conference theme, "Citizens Not
Spectators: Fulfilling the Promise of Democracy," highlights service-learning
pedagogy as a central strategy for bridging the instruction of civic knowledge
and skills with opportunities for active service. In these times of uncertainty
and unrest, the greatest need of a lively democracy is an active citizenry; to
reinvigorate our democracy, we must start with young people.
For this
conference, we seek strong proposals which explore how schools, higher education
institutions and community-based organizations form partnerships to meet both
the educational goals of students and the needs of their communities. The
conference committee is particularly interested in interactive workshops,
panels, demonstrations, and presentations which address the topics highlighted
in the conference strands. These strands are meant to inspire a broad topical
range. Across all strands, we assume youth and intergenerational involvement,
and the capacity to address issues of diversity.
Proposals by and/or
including young people and from
international participants are strongly encouraged.
To submit a
proposal, download the application from the
conference website at www.nylc.org and
proceed according to the instructions.
