Re: SL Student Resource Ideas

Hi Andrea,
May I suggest contacting the Bonner Foundation website at www.bonner .org.
At our recent Summer Institute held in Princeton NJ. we recieved a niffty
little booklet titled the" Common Commitment Toolkit". It sound very much
like what your working on. I'm sure the Foundation could share some
resource information with you. The handy little pocket version has
information on publications, songs , movies, conferences and conference
centers, exercises and workshops, speakers bureau, web based resources,
organizations and partnerships, related to community service and service
learning. This is an ongoing work in progress as the information is
gathered from the 24 Bonner Campuses.
On diversity a couple of suggestions would be the Peoples Instutitue on
Undoing Racism, which is an intensive weekend long workshop. Upto 40
participants representing a cross section of the community, ie students,
facutly, staff and local community members examine the institutionalization
and internalization of racism through the "Foot" analysis which attempts to
answer the question,"who is kicking your behind" in the power sturctures
of communtities. This can be a very intense and powerful experience. We
offer it at our campus at least once a year. I would also recommend
diversity expoloration through music, poetry and storytelling as a powerful
way of raising cultural awareness and creating community. Check with your
local arts council or National Storytellers Assoc. I am co-founder of an
Arts Ed. Program called GA-LI . We are a musical duo that performs music,
poetry and storytelling based on our collective cultural heritage of
Native American, Latino, Afro-caribbean and European ancestry. Through
traditional and original works we share the challenges of growing up as
"other" and the cultural richness, strength and beauty our differences
and inherent similarities provide us as humanbeings. I'm sure you can find
out about other cultural workers through your arts council. Good Luck in
putting you programing together and please share once you've complied.
