Shari,

At USD, we have 2 AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers who work extensively with the
community as a liaison to the university. They are both full-time, but they
have office duties in addition to their community work. Our first VISTA
spends about 10 hours in the community per week, but she has many more
administrative duties than our newest VISTA. It is unsure how much time our
second one will be spending "in the field" since she just started last week,
but it looks as though her time may be more of a half office/half field
position, focusing mostly on our rural poor and immigrant populations.

Their salary is only a living allowance plus an educational award due to
their VISTA status. I hope this helps in some way!

Hi Shari,

Our graduate assistant serves as our community liaison. As we only
have about 15 S-L classes a semester - and only about 3 or 4 faculty who
request assistance, a grad is perfect. This is only about 15% of her
job allocation. We thought it would be 50% when the position was first
created. Adrienne_jablonski@ncsu.edu - you can reach her at this
address if you want to find out more about what she does.

She is paid $13K for the year and focuses on service (ie: MLK Service
Challenge, AFB Trip, monthly volunteerism events) & leadership (advises
peer educators) in addition to her Comm. liaison responsibilties. The
assistantship was brand new last year. I have re-written the jd for the
next person - it is attached.

Hi. I am the service-learning partnership coordinator at Portland
Community College. I work with a faculty member whom has half time
release for her position as service-learning faculty coordinator. My
position is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service

Hope this helps.

Shari,

Yes, we have thought about the continuity. Right now, we are in the
situation where our first VISTA is leaving after her first year. Our second
VISTA, having just started, will be here for at least a year, maybe stay for
the 2. We have arranged for community trainings to be held twice a year
(once a semester), hosted by the VISTAs. While this doesn't present a
strong sense of continuity, there is some. It isn't full-proof the way we
have it set up, but without support from the higher-ups, it's the best we
can do right now. Also, when the grant for these VISTAs expires (2 VISTAs
for 3 years a piece), I myself would hope that the university would
institutionalize the position and create a full-time employed position.

Hello Shari,
I hope my responses are helpful. Please call me if you want more
cliarification.

Luis Sierra

Dear Colleagues,

At Appalachian State University, we are investigating the idea of
creating a Community Partner Liaison position within our program. If
your program has such a position, I would greatly appreciate it if you
would send me the following information.

Is this position part time or full time?
For CSUMB Service Learning Institute, it is a 10-month (August-May)
appointment. This is not ideal, but it is what our budget allows.
Previously it was organized as 80% 12 month job (Mon-Thursday).

What is the salary for this position?
between 32-36K for the 10 month appointment, which would equal 38,400 and
43,000 for a year-round full time employment. Please keep in mind that
Monterey County has a high cost of living, comparable to San Francisco and
most of New York City.

What is the job description for this position?
See attachment
This year, Risk Management is taking up an increasing percentage of time;
at least 40% of my time, as well as a considerable amount of time of our
Associate Director (my immediate supervisor) and Director. It is a new
process for us and was not foreseen to be as cumbersome as it actually is.

Typically, how much time does this person spend in the field?
About 40%. Should be 60%, but Risk Management has demanded more office
time.
In the office? About 60%

Dear Shari,

We have "expert community partners" which were developed via a
Washington Campus Compact grant (Learn and Serve) four years ago. The
grant included a consortia of colleges and universities in our region
(4). Each institution chose two CP's for intensive professional
development on service-learning pedagogy. The partners were stipended
$1,500/academic year for their time. In addition to training, they
agreed to serve on an inter-institutional SL advisory board (The Inland
Northwest Service-Learning Partnership). These "expert" CP's also
assisted INSLP to develop inter-institutional faculty/CP development
workshops and events. Eventually they served as mentors to "new" SL
CP's. Although the grant has run out, these partners continue to be
actively involved in INSLP and the development of SL both at their
partner institutions and regionally. For more information on INSLP, you
can visit the website at: home.comcast.net~INSLP.

We are hoping to fill a similar position through a VISTA worker
supported by TX Campus Compact.

As a VISTA, it would be full-time and not paid by the university -
though we are including a meal plan.

I am attaching the job description - but can't tell you much more
because it is new and there is nobody in the position as of yet. Best
of luck!

We do, in fact, have a Community Liaison in our office.

She is an absolute gem -- and, due to minimal resources,
undoubtedly nearly overworked and certainly underpaid.

Currently, the position is slated with the target being 15
hours/week. I would have it be at least part-time, ideally
full-time, if we had the resources.

The position pays $15/hour.

Job description = see attached.

Time the field? At the beginning of our program, 30% -- more
recently, 5% (but our Community Liaison does so much more
than the tasks and assignments formally matched to the job
description...hence the lesser percent. Ideally, she would
spend much more time in the field -- but, alas, we are also
understaffed).

In the office? Well, the other 95%, I suppose.

I could go on and on about our Community Liaison! If you have
any other questions, do get in touch with me.

Yours,
Michael
