Forwarded by request: ----------------------------- I am pleased to announce that an online certification form is now available for all high schools nationwide to select up to two students to receive a $1,000 Presidential Freedom Scholarship. The program is designed to highlight and promote service and citizenship by students and to recognize students with Presidential recognition and a college scholarship. The students selected may be either high school juniors or seniors.
Higher education institutions can participate in the Presidential Freedom Scholarships in several ways. For example: · Let the schools in your community know about this opportunity; · Work with the high schools where your students serve to identify potential recipients; · Help to identify a source for the match or provide the match for the scholarship; · Contact your college financial aid office and encourage them to provide an additional match for students who enter the college with a Presidential Freedom Scholarship; · Encourage the admissions office to consider community service, and the Presidential Freedom Scholarship recipients in particular, in the admissions process.
The scholarship certification process is easy and requires only a small amount of time. We encourage you to visit the program's web site, where in addition to program information, you will find a link to the new online certification process. Please visit www.nationalservice.org/scholarships where you can use this fast, easy-to-use process. You are also able to download a paper certification form if you prefer. Only forms submitted by school personnel will be accepted. Presidential Freedom Scholarship packets will also be mailed to all high school guidance departments nationwide.
The Corporation for National and Community Service provides $500 which must be matched with $500 secured by the school from the community. Each participating high school must arrange for a local matching scholarship of $500, but local support for your students is easier to find than you might think. More than 25,000 scholarships have been awarded to date, and local scholarship matching funds have been provided by a wide range of sources, such as the PTAs, booster or alumni clubs, businesses, and local civic and fraternal organizations.
Certification forms will be accepted until July 11, 2003. All scholarship recipients will receive a certificate from President George W. Bush, a letter of recognition, and a President's Student Service Award gold pin. Each scholarship check of $500 from the Corporation for National and Community Service will be mailed directly to the student made payable jointly to the student and his/her institution of higher education.
