AmeriCorps*VISTA Position at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), in the heart of West Philadelphia, is seeking an AmeriCorps*VISTA to promote civic responsibility among 2200 students and 170 faculty members.  VISTA will be challenged to increase visibility of service and service-learning at USP and in the community through outreach activities by students and faculty to neighborhood residents.  Help address poverty and enhance nutrition and health initiatives!

VISTA will function as the Service-learning/Community Service Coordinator for the University, working closely with the Dean of Student and the Division of Student Affairs.  As the program VISTA you will:

 Meet with leaders from community and campus organizations

• Develop a variety of forms to collect information (i.e. site information form, applications for volunteers, interview checklist, activities report)
• Develop a system for matching volunteers with community needs
• Devise training workshops and assessment tools for workshops
• Establish a means for publicizing information on service activities and accomplishments
• Coordinate placement of work-study students for initiatives in the community and on campus
• Determine future needs of community and faculty and facilitate connections
• Assist in the development of funding proposals by providing data and research

 The successful AmeriCorps*VISTA applicant will receive the following compensation in return for one full year of service:

•  Annual living stipend of $10,116
• Full food plan
• Health insurance coverage
• Education award of $4,725 or a stipend of $1,200 at the end of the year
• Sick and Personal Days - 10 days each
• Life insurance available
• Up to $500 for relocation expenses
• Forbearance on some student loans during the year of service

The year of service for this position begins August 28, 2002 (Pre-Service Training August 19-22).  Applicants must apply by May 15, 2002 to meet processing deadline of June 1, 2002.
