Associate Director, Swearer Center for Public Service /
Director Royce Fellowship Program
Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island
Job Description

This is a joint position of associate director of the Swearer Center for Public Service and the director of the Royce Fellowship Program at Brown University. Responsibilities include leading staff to provide effective, comprehensive public service programs for the University, developing academic support initiatives, and overseeing the development of new initiatives. The position is the key leader of the Royce Fellowship Program and provides leadership for the Swearer Center in the director's absence.

o The Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service
The Swearer Center considers active community participation and social responsibility to be central concerns of a liberal education. We believe students -- indeed all of us -- can make valuable social contributions while learning. This approach reflects the University's public trust to both prepare its students for meaningful engagement in the American democracy and to be of service to the world. Individual social responsibility is intrinsic to the development of solutions to our communities' most pressing concerns. For this reason, the Swearer Center encourages students to expose themselves to the depth and complexity of social problems -- exploring both their human and moral dimensions -- as they build relationships within communities. While the Center's definition of service includes many perspectives and approaches, it is grounded in a community-development model of respect, cooperation, and partnership. Our experience leads us to believe that for service work to be of value to both communities and those engaged in the work it must develop through enduring relationships that strengthen a community's capacity to meet critical needs and to solve urgent problems. Currently the Center is the sponsor of 50 student-led community-based projects. Additionally, we provide support and resources for students interested in doing service in local community agencies. We have a database of over 250 community service opportunities. The Swearer Center is a program of Brown University Office of the Dean of the College. For more in-depth information on the Center, please visit our website at http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Swearer_Center/.

Royce Fellowship Program
The Royce Fellowship Program was established by a $3-million gift from Charles M. Royce, a 1961 graduate of Brown University and parent of two Brown graduates. Royce, president of Royce Funds, has served as a University trustee since 1989 and is an active member of several committees, including the Corporation Committee on Admission and Financial Aid. Every spring, since 1996, twenty-five students at Brown are inducted into the Society of Royce Fellows, receiving a merit fellowship of up to $4,000 to pursue a project of their own design. These students, from varied disciplines in the arts, humanities and sciences, become lifetime members of the Society, joining those before them who have been recognized for their creative thinking, service to Brown and community, and leadership qualities. By honoring the pursuit of academic questions and social concerns and by encouraging passionate engagement with a particular topic, the hope is that the Royce experience will encourage a deep sense of commitment to one's thoughts and ideas, the community and the world beyond Brown. Eight faculty members serve each year as Faculty Fellows. Their participation and support symbolize the notions of community and sharing, mutual learning and respect that were the impetus behind the idea of a society within the larger culture of Brown. Bringing together outstanding Brown students and faculty in a voluntary community, the Society of Royce Fellows hopes to create an environment for accomplished and budding intellectuals alike to discuss their individual projects and collegial concerns.
