It is estimated that approximately 12 million of the 40
million inhabitants of South Africa are functionally illiterate. The SA Minister of Education, has identified literacy as one of the priorities
of the national Department of Education. The South African Qualifications
Authority (SAQA) is currently debating its position with regard to the inclusion
of service learning into higher education in South Africa and would like a
few service-learning case studies where higher education students are used
to teach literacy as part of an accredited academic program.
Case studies should be no longer than two or
three pages. The format should include (i) the discipline (e.g. law
students, English language students etc.) and level (3rd year etc.) of
students involved, (ii) the objectives of the service-learning component
of the course, (iii) the respective role of students, faculty, community
members and service agencies, (iv) the nature and duration of student
placements, (v) assessment and accreditation of the service learning
components of the course, (vi) the perceived benefits to students,
faculty, community members and service agencies, and (vii) the factors which
promoted and/or inhibited the implementation of the service learning
component of the course.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated, acknowledged,
and may contribute towards the formulation of policy to increase the level of
literacy in South Africa.
