The reference to the Oliners' study on rescuing and not rescuing is one
of many that relates a sense of community to altruism and to a willingness
to make sacrifices for the common good. I haven't seen anything that
makes a direct link to service learning, however. Maybe the closest I've
seen are studies of restitutionary programs in which criminals are
required to make restitution to their victims or to the community at
large. Insofar as these programs are supposed to help the criminals
understand that they have harmed other people, they could be considered
a kind of service learning.
