I've read with great interest all the information about Putnam's
article(s). He was highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education this
week as well and one of the things he said was that and I won't
quote....~we know our parents went to PTA meetings and we don't, and we
know our parents played bridge and we don't...~

I am fascinated with Putnam's whole idea so I've discussed it frequently
with my peers and have learned that my ideas about community for my
parents' generation are really unfounded. I thought my parents were the
only ones that were too busy to get involved, but am finding from my
little informal study that very few of my peers' parents were civically
involved at all.

Maybe this talk about the community involvement of generations gone by is
really just nostalgia? Just a thought.

Meanwhile....boycott tv. I agree that it is the culprit of much of our
societal malaise.

good day. kelly
