Good day to all members of the list!

The following is a "brief" message to inform you that exit reports
have been produced for an experiential program that was recently held
in D.C. I have extra copies (though not many!) available to those
who are interested in academic programs which focus on
community/public service and the nonprofit community, in general. As
such, please note:

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, a D.C.-
based educational nonprofit, recently sponsored the LEADERSHIP 2000:
WITHIN THE INDEPENDENT SECTOR program. This 2-week academic seminar
was held from Jan. 2-12, 1996 in Washington and was attended by 75
college students (both undergrad and grad) who are leaders on their
campuses and in their home communities.

The seminar, which was fully-funded by a contribution from AMERICAN
EXPRESS, was designed to investigate the nation's growing nonprofit
community with a particular focus on service-oriented organizations
(charities, philanthropies, traditional advocacy groups and service
providers, etc.). The program was able to introduce the students to
the leadership of some of America's most important and
influential independent sector (i.e., neither public nor private
sector) organizations since Washington, D.C. serves as the nerve
center for the nation's nonprofit sector.

As an academic program, students earned CREDIT for their
participation in the program, which was highly competitive since
American Express covered both the housing AND program fees for all
student participants. During the program, students attended lectures,
panel discussions, site visits, interactive workshops, and briefings
in and around Washington, D.C. They also participated in daily small
group discussion sessions which were led by qualified faculty members
(identified as Faculty Leaders) who were recruited from campuses from
across the country based on their practical experience in some area
relating to the nonprofit world.

To earn credit, students were required to complete a series of
academic assignments, including daily readings, journal entries, an
individual final report, and a group project. Each student was
evaluated by their Faculty Leader and the recommended grades were
then sent to their home institutions for the awarding of the credit
units.

A FINAL REPORT and evaluation of the program--which was in its VERY
FIRST year--was recently completed by The Washington Center. Copies
are now available (in limited supply) if any of you are interested in
gaining insights into how WE were able to put together a very hands-
on academic program specifically designed for students who are active
in service on their campuses and in their communities.

If you would like to request a copy, please respond to the address
that will be given shortly. There is NO CHARGE for these copies but
there is a limited supply and preference will be given to those
individuals who are directly affiliated with a COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY.
Please send your responses to:

One final note: the LEADERSHIP 2000 seminar is part of The Washington
Center's larger INDEPENDENT SECTOR PROGRAMS. Our "IS" program also
includes opportunities for college students to EARN CREDIT and GAIN
HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE by working as an INTERN in a Washington, D.C.
office that meets both their academic and professional needs.

The Independent Sector Internship Program at The Washington Center
places students at a wide range of service-oriented nonprofits in
D.C. so the opportunities are practically endless. We literally work
w/ thousands of organizations in all areas--public, private, and
independent sectors--but the IS Program is specifically designed for
students interested in NONPROFITS, w/ an emphasis on service-oriented
organizations or advocacy groups.

If you would like more information on the Independent Sector
INTERNSHIP Program, please reply to the same address listed above.
Thanks for listening to those of you who have made it this far!

Regards,

GARY
