Colorado State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant
Director of Community Services.

The Division of Student Affairs at Colorado State University is a comprehensive student
affairs program which serves a major state university and land grant college. The Division of
Student Affairs encompasses a wide array of departmental services and programs addressing
the needs of a student body of approximately 21,000.

Colorado State is in Fort Collins, a city of 100,000 which is 65 miles north of Denver. The
city offers a unique blend of metropolitan advantages and small town friendliness. Located at
the western edge of the Great Plains and at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountain foothills,
Fort Collins with its ideal climate provides easy access to numerous outdoor activities.

Position Description

The Office of Community Services (OCS) at Colorado State University offers a continuum of
service-learning and volunteer opportunities for Colorado State University students. The
Assistant Director will lead and manage student Program Coordinators and student volunteers.
The Assistant Director will consult and plan with university and community members and
professionals from the non-profit sector to develop partnerships and placements that meet real
and identified community needs, and that offer both community members and students an
opportunity to further understand the conditions that give rise to the need for the service. The
Assistant Director will work closely with OCS staff to evaluate and develop overall policies
and procedures. The Assistant Director is responsible for Alternative Thanksgiving Break,
Alternative Spring Break and Cans Around the Oval. The Assistant Director reports to the
Director of Community Services.

Specific Responsibilities

Responsible for hiring, staff development, supervision and evaluation of part-time student
Program Coordinators.

Oversees selection, training, supervision and evaluation of student volunteers in all
Community Service programs.

Assists Program Coordinators in all aspects of developing and implementing service-
learning weekly programs, trainings and special events.

Coordinates and supervises Cans Around The Oval.

Coordinates, supervises and participates in Alternative Break Program.

Assists the Director in researching and developing new areas of service programming.

Assists Director with Strategic Plans and annual reports.

Recruits, contracts, supervises and maintains partnerships with community non-profit
organizations.

Participates as a staff member in the full activities of the Community Services Office,
assisting in staff development, office retreats, program development and design, etc.

Develops and coordinates additional community service-learning worksites as needed.

Completes semi-annual program reports.

Assists students inquiring about service learning opportunities and models through
individual meetings, group forums, written materials, etc.

Represents office and service-learning on campus, community and state committees.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Community Education, Social Work, Education, Human
Development, Student Personnel, Experiential Education or related degree. Masters
degree preferred.

Minimum of five years of paid experience in community services administration in higher
education or in a similar field. An advanced degree may substitute for up to two years of
experience.

Minimum of three years of experience and demonstrated expertise in supervision and/or
administration.

Demonstrated ability to work successfully with community leaders, faculty and students.

Fully understand and articulate a service learning philosophy, with particular emphasis on
public service in higher education.

Understand and articulate a philosophy that supports links between the educational sector
and the community sector.

Ability to adjust to unusual situations and hours of work and a willingness and interest in
devoting time on weekends and evenings, when appropriate and necessary.

Understand and articulate the needs and concerns of ethnically diverse people, people with
disabilities, women, and people with non-traditional lifestyles.

A demonstrated personal and professional commitment to diversity.

Demonstrated verbal and writing skills, including public speaking.

Ability to work independently and creatively to solve problems, create programs and to
resolve differences.

Optimistic, creative, and energetic leadership styles including the ability to delegate
responsibility, stimulate entrepreneurial activity and utilize a student development model
which empowers, supports and maintains accountability.

Potential to be a leader in the Community Services/Service-Learning profession.

Salary

$28,000 - $30,000
12 month appointment with full benefit package.
