Please forward information regarding the evaluation tool.

The Community Design Assistance Center at Virginia Tech is currently
teaching a course linking landscape architecture students
(graduate/undergraduate) to community service & mentoring within the local
community, as well as administering a larger grant project (Outreach for
Community Restoration - funded by FIPSE) with similar themes. We are in
the process of designing evaluation tools for the grant as well as the
course. Thanks in advance.

I am attaching our course syllabus as well; Spring 1996 is the pilot
course, a second 'hands-on' design/construction course will be offered in
Summer Session and next year the course will become a registered
Service-Learning course. Briefly, the course brings together
post-secondary students and secondary students from the local community to:
1. design/construct a local site (environmental &/or community
restoration); 2. expose at risk, inner city and rural students to higher
education and the design professions (which typically have a low diversity
profile); 3. promote mentoring by post-secondary students for secondary
students; and encourage interpersonal skills, community interaction,
real-world experience, & leadership by: a. organizing class members into
an autonomous design team which receives group grades, b. public
presentations to client, community members, secondary students, and other
involved agencies related to chosen site, c. design of a real site with
real clients, d. implementation of some aspect of the design.

Any information on similar courses (design/build related: architecture,
planning, landscape architecture, interior design, horticulture, etc.) and
how you have incorporated/structured the Service-Learning component would
be helpful. Any related syllabi would also be of benefit. Please reply by
email to Elizabeth Gilboy or myself at the email addresses below. Thank
you!
