I believe that we should all be aware that these are not private
communications that we send when we use email. Not only are most
distribution lists open to all individuals, but email communications are
archived; even when you delete the message, you can be assured that a
copy exists somewhere. Many individuals have learned too late that
their "private" comments could actually be examined by others.
Though Rep. Gingrich has not been a friend to education, I think that
this is actually one program that he would support if he were aware of
the benefits; the involvement of his staff in this list could actually be
a good thing. Service learning programs provide an enormous amount of
volunteer service to many non-profit organizations as well and directly
help many people in need. These programs also help to develop positive
character traits among America's youth. Programs that receive federal
support through the CNS are also exceptionally cost effective. Some
states fund around eighty programs serving thousands of individuals and
producing well over a hundred thousand hours of service for only a three
to four hundred thousand dollars. (The money goes to purchase project
materials and provide educational materials and support for the programs,
not to pay volunteers.) These projects include afterschool programs for
youth, inter-generational programs, support for "at risk" students, projects
that help feed the hungry and provide support and services to victims of
natural disasters.
