We are in the process of hiring 2 staff people at the Swearer Center at
Brown. The first is ideal for a recent college graduate and the second
requires 3-5 professional experience. The descriptions are below.

1. Position Announcement
Community Service Coordinator

The Swearer Center for Public Service considers active community
participation and social responsibility central to educational concerns at
Brown University. The Swearer Center believes that students can make
valuable contributions to the world as they gain challenging educational
experience. To this end, the Swearer Center provides students with
opportunities:
* to increase their community involvement and strengthen their leadership
skills through direct service
* to connect community-based work with academic study
* to build meaningful relationships with community members and agencies.
Through all of our programs, the Swearer Center combines thorough
preparation for community service with learning about the complexity of
social issues. Learning of this kind is greatly enriched when students
integrate their academic and community-based learning with their
intellectual work at the university.

The Community Service Coordinator is responsible for organizing and
supporting the student volunteers and community service initiatives of the
Swearer Center. S/he also advises Brown Community Outreach and is
responsible for maintaining relationships with 100 community-based agencies
through BCO's volunteer clearinghouse.

Specific Responsibilities Include:
* Coordination of community service activities: first-year orientation
activities such as forums and one-day service projects; advise potential
student volunteers; communicate with community-based agencies who work
with Brown volunteers; work with the director to establish and coordinate
cooperative relationship with the Rhode Island School of Design; support
student-initiated service programs undertaken by fraternities, athletes, et
al; support staff volunteer program.
* Advise Brown Community Outreach: Provide advice and support to BCO.
Help facilitate trainings of board members and provide on-going weekly
support to them. Oversee the operation of three university-owned
automobiles.
* Coordinate educational programs and materials for the College and
Providence communities: implement speaker series, brown bag lunches and
forums on the work and issues that students engaged with; developing
brochures, fact sheets, newsletters and other publications that promote,
support and describe student community service work.
* Coordinate the off-campus, community service Federal Work Study Program
* Other duties as assigned by the director or associate director.

Qualifications
Experience as an undergraduate in community service programs; BA ;
Ability to work as part of a team and fulfill expected duties
independently; Understanding of and ability to articulate the importance
of service within a university education; written and oral communication
skills; Ability to work professionally with students, faculty and staff,
alumni, community members, and; Ability to interact with technology and
utilize technological tools in an educational environment; use of word
processing, desktop publishing, and electronic communication software is
critical to this position.

Assistant Director/Community Development

The Swearer Center for Public Service considers active community

The Assistant Director/Community Development supervises and oversees the
Swearer Center's community development initiatives in the Greater
Providence Area. S/he is also responsible for the administration of
several key projects both on and off campus. S/he oversees cooperative and
collaborative projects undertaken between the Center and other University
departments.

Specific Responsibilities Include:
* Oversight of Community Development Initiatives: Coordinating Community
Development Team and conducting the training, support and assessment of
team and its members; fund-raising for community development projects;
communicating and negotiating with community-based agencies to establish
programs; supervision of up to 20 part-time, student staff; the
development of new community development initiatives
* Administration of Programs: coordination of President's Community
Service Fellowship, Howard R. Swearer International Fellowship,
International Program, and Public Service Career Program; this includes
the advising of students, administration of selection committees,
disbursement of funds, the support of participating students, and the
evaluation of programs.
* Coordinate inter-office collaboration with administrative, academic and
student centers: maintain and enhance partnerships between the Swearer
Center and the Third World Center, the Women's Center, the Center for
Environmental Studies, Alumni Relations, the World Hunger Program, Public
Policy, Hillel and the Chaplains Office; develop university-wide staff
volunteer program
* Other responsibilities as assigned by the director.

Qualifications:
* Experience in university programs as either professional or
undergraduate; ability to advise students on vocational and educational
matters; willingness to view oneself as university educator
* 3-5 years experience with community development programs as professional
or volunteer.
* BA degree.
* Ability to work professionally with students, faculty and staff, alumni,
community members, and funders.
* Ability to work in a collaborative work environment as part of team;
willingness to learn from and with colleagues; ability to effectively
assume responsibility for duties and to implement them.
* Ability to interact with technology and utilize technological tools in an
educational environment; use of word processing, desktop publishing, and
electronic communication software is critical to this position.
