At Virginia Tech, we are seeking ideas and information on "equivalent
assignments" for classes where service-learning is an option.
Specifically, we are seeking ways to assist faculty in developing
assignments which are congruent in terms of time commited, training
required, and assignments completed, for it appears that service-learning
projects and traditional course assignments are not generally well matched.
Existing models of such "equivalent assignments" would be greatly
appreciated.

An added bonus would be models of projects which, while traditionally
research oriented in scope, would also investigate a community issue. Such
projects have the benefit of encouraging open classroom discussion around
similar learning experiences. While some of these may be similar to the
"Action Research" projects discussed earlier in this forum, any examples of
student involvement in community research projects would be appreciated.
