CCLS MINOR with concentration in Italian studies or language
1 course: Intro to Comparative Studies (ML 207), offered in the Spring only
2 courses: several 200-level Italian language courses (201, 202, 205
currently
offered;
201
offered each Fall, and 202/205 alternating in the Spring;
pre-requisite for each is IT 104 or equivalent placement). Also
possible are 200-level equivalents from study abroad or ML 200-
level Italian literature courses (see below).
2 courses at 300-level (or 400-level), either from core CCLS or from Italian
literature or culture, or courses from participating departments as
approved by the advisor in consultation with the CCLS committee.
If these are to be literature in Italian, they will normally need to
be
taken either abroad or at the participating Baltimore Student Exchange
Program
(BSEP)
schools, though students are encouraged to take 300-level
literature courses
in Italian
when offered at Loyola. (For links to BSEP on-line catalogues, see Italian
Minor Equivalent.)
Please remember that, as with other minors, only two courses from abroad can be counted; similarly, courses cannot count for more than two minors/majors or the core. (For example, your core history course can only be counted toward the CCLS minor and nothing else– not a Medieval Studies Minor.)
Among the possibilities for courses at Loyola are:
ML 251 Introduction to Medieval Italian Literature
ML 260 Dante's Divine Comedy (in English translation)
ML 333 Witches, Giants, and Tyrants, Oh My! An introduction to Italian Renaissance Literature
HS 317 Italy since 1700
HS 418 Mussolini & Fascist Italy (special topic)
AH 312 The Renaissance in Italy
AH 325 Building the Eternal City: 2000 Years of Rome
NB: In order for these courses to count they MUST BE APPROVED as part of your program. The comparative cultural aspect of the course needs to be clear to have it approved. There may be other courses that qualify, as course offerings vary from year to year and new courses are frequently developed. In order to request approval, please bring a copy of:
1. The course syllabus
2. The course description and
3. Your minor program
to your CCLS advisor. This should be done the semester BEFORE you
enroll in the course, and
is especially urgent for graduating seniors. Your advisor will need to
check over your program in
spring of your junior year to make sure you have the necessary courses
to graduate, and that you
will be able to fulfill the remaining requirements in your senior year.
If you plan to study abroad
in your junior year, please meet with your minor advisor BEFORE
departing to clear all the
minor courses and to plan your senior year.
The current CCLS Director is Dr.
Ursula Beitter.
